I am Dr. Eszter Szép, an independent researcher, educator, journalist and curator from Hungary. I mainly write and talk about comics, but I am interested in many other aspects of visual and popular culture.
I write articles and reviews both in English and in Hungarian. I love coffee, analog photography, and dinosaurs. I am busy writing a book at the moment!
I co-curated a major exhibition on Hungarian comics at the National Széchényi Library. “Comics as Narrative” was on display between 14 May and 28 July, and it focused on two chapters from the history of Hungarian comics: literary adaptations until 1975 and contemporary comics. I was responsible for the latter section, and I greatly enjoyed working on this exhibition! I also edited this beautiful bilingual catalog that you can see in the picture. More info here.
I am an advisory board member of the Encapsulations: Critical Comics Studies series, (University of Nebraska Press, 2019-), and editorial board member of Studies in Comics (2016-). I am also a news review correspondent to the Comics Forum.
I am a founding member of the Narratives of Culture and Identity Research group, with who I have organized an international conference on gendered identities in contemporary literary and visual cultures (info), and I have co-edited a collection of best of essays of the conference. You can find more info on the collection entitled Turning the Page here.
I am also a board member of the Hungarian Comics association, where I take part in organising festivals and talks, and the chair of the Ninth Art Foundation.
