Welcome to my website,
I am Eszter Szép, an independent researcher, educator, journalist and curator from Hungary. I have an upcoming book with Ohio State University Press, entitled Nonfiction Comics: Drawing, Reading and the Vulnerable Body. I have to finish the manuscript first, though. 🙂
Recently I have co-curated a major exhibition on Hungarian comics at the National Széchényi Library. The exhibition is called Comics as Narrative, and it focuses on two chapters from the history of Hungarian comics, namely literary adaptations until 1975 and contemporary comics. I was responsible for the latter section, and I greatly enjoyed working on this exhibition!
I am a peer reviewer for Studies in Comics (2016-), and I am a news review correspondent to the Comics Forum. I am a founding member of the Narratives of Culture and Identity Research group, with who we have undertaking several interesting projects. With Kata Gyuris we organized an international conference on gendered identities in contemporary literary and visual cultures (info), and in January 2018 we published a collection of essays based on some of the papers read at the conference. You can find more info on the collection entitled Turning the Page here.
I am also a board member of the Hungarian Comics association, where I take part in organising festivals and talks.
I write articles and reviews both in English and in Hungarian. I love coffee, analog photography, and dinosaurs.
